SOUTH AUSTRALIA

BreastScreen SA
BreastScreen SA is the South Australian component of BreastScreen Australia, the national breast cancer screening program. The aim of BreastScreen SA is to reduce mortality and morbidity attributable to breast cancer, by providing a free government screening mammography service on a statewide basis. Women aged 40 and over with no breast symptoms are eligible to attend. However, the service primarily targets women aged 50 to 69, and aims to ensure equitable access for women in this age group (including women from Aboriginal, culturally and linguistically diverse, rural/remote and/or lower socioeconomic backgrounds, and women with special needs).

BreastScreen SA provides free screening at nine dedicated and accredited screening clinics. They are accessible, non-threatening and comfortable environments with expertly trained and experienced staff, who will do their best to ensure every woman receives an efficient and caring service. There are six screening clinics in metropolitan Adelaide. Rural and remote women, for whom lack of transport may prevent participation in screening, are well served by two mobile x-ray units, which visit 26 country regions every two years, the recommended screening interval. A third mobile x-ray unit, introduced in February 2000, provides screening every two years primarily in outer metropolitan Adelaide areas, and some country areas.

South Australian Cervix Screening Program
The South Australian Cervix Screening Program is part of the National Cervical Screening Program. The aim of the Program is to reduce the incidence of cancer of the cervix by increasing the proportion of women who are screened at two yearly intervals and by promoting a high quality of screening and follow-up services. One of the main tasks of the Program is to encourage women to have a Pap smear every two years in line with the national policy. Recruitment activities target the general population of women, with particular emphasis on women who are over 50 years, Aboriginal women, women who live in rural and remote areas and women from non-English speaking backgrounds.

The Program has established the Pap Smear Back-Up Record System, a register of all Pap smears and biopsies from all SA laboratories. Through this the Program sends reminders to women and their doctors when Pap smears or follow-up treatment is overdue, assists laboratories in case management and provides statistics on screening participation. The Program also has a role in assisting laboratories with quality assurance activities and promoting national guidelines on the follow-up and treatment of screen detected abnormalities.

The Cervical Cancer Prevention Program aims to decrease the incidence of cervical cancer in Tasmanian women through active promotional campaigns encouraging previously unscreened and under-screened women to have regular Pap smears and maintaining high levels of two yearly screening among women who have regular Pap smears. The Program also maintains the Cervical Cytology Register, which records the Pap smear test result performed in Tasmania. It provides a backup reminder service for women within 25 months of their last Pap smear or who are overdue for follow up of an abnormality. Enrolment on the Cervical Cytology Register is voluntary. Please advise your doctor if you do not wish to be enrolled. Doctors - we can provide a screening history of your patients on request, and lists of your patients who are overdue for follow up or rescreening.

NORTHERN TERRITORY

Well Women's Cancer Screening
The Well Women's Cancer Screening (previously Women's Cancer Prevention Program) was established in 1994 to implement the National Cervical Screening Program and BreastScreen Australia in the NT. The program has adopted a holistic approach to women's screening which incorporates the cervical and breast screening programs into a well women's screening model. This model is particularly appropriate for the expressed needs of Aboriginal women in the NT who are the major target group for the Cervical Screening Program. BreastScreen NT provides free breast screening for asymptomatic women over 50 years. Screening centres are located in Darwin and Alice Springs and a visiting service travels to Tennant Creek, Katherine annually and Nhulunbuy (Gove) biennially. A Territory Pap Smear Register is co-ordinated by the Well Women's Cancer Screening to aid in the prevention and early detection of cervical cancer. A Remote Areas Well Women's Screening Program services remote area women and provides breast examinations, and pap smear screening in a culturally appropriate manner.
